In our English Paper Piecing Hexies Sew Fun Saturday, you’ll learn the timeless tradition of English Paper Piecing using scraps of fabrics, shaped paper templates, and a needle and thread. Get ready for some therapeutic handsewing – this is a portable and satisfying hobby that will have you re-evaluating your scrap pile!

We’ll look at all the basics you’ll need to get started, and then you’ll get cracking turning scraps and tiny pieces of fabric into something brand new. You’ll learn how to sew baste your hexies, look at glue basting as an option, discuss seam allowances and find out how to join your hexies. We’ll look at reusing the paper templates, the best way to press seams, and finally creating a new length of pieced-fabric that is ready to use in your next sewing project: make a bag, a zip pouch, a quilt panel, or even a dress! There is no limit to your imagination.

Bring along any scraps of quilting cotton, cotton lawn, or poplin cotton that you have at home that are bigger than 2.5 inches square (just shy of 6.5cm). We will trim them down to size and prep them for paper piecing. You can colour coordinate your scraps, or go completely wild and random.

This course is suitable for all levels of sewing experience, even complete beginners, and there’ll be plenty to keep more experienced sewers busy. You can bring your own fabric stash and favourite fabrics to use, or purchase discounted fabrics on the day from the incredible collection available at the Dressmakers Fabrics shop.
